How can music therapy work for you?

Music therapy uses music and expressive arts-based techniques to help people work towards health, wellness, and other therapeutic goals. As part of our program, you will have the space to develop an individualized plan to help you support your recovery, growth, and wellness in whatever manner best fits your situation.

Our emphases are on training and empowerment, self-awareness, reflection, mindfulness, and other cognitive-behavioral techniques. Music and creative arts-based techniques may provide an opening point or structure for a session, or they may be used as direct therapeutic tools. We also know that developing a supportive and trusting relationship with your therapist is a key element of recovery and growth, and we prioritize the therapeutic relationship across treatment areas.

Music therapy has been shown to be beneficial in many ways. Music can help facilitate mindfulness and relaxation, provide motivation for fitness, growth, and healing, and support emotional expression and processing. Physiologically, music therapy has been shown to reduce blood pressure, chronic inflammation, and circulating stress hormones, and based on music's relationship to human neurophysiology, music therapy can also help people relearn to speak and walk after strokes or other forms of brain damage. Music therapy has been found to boost the immune system, as well, and it can increase feelings of connection, decrease pain and anxiety, and elevate mood. Additionally, by empowering clients to take more control of their health and wellness, music therapy can be particularly beneficial in assisting with sustainable positive change.

Music Therapy Nashville emphasizes a biopsychosocial approach to therapy. This means that we consider biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to an individual's health or illness. We also use a multimodal approach in finding the best type of treatment for our clients. This means that we may use a combination of many types of frameworks, including biological, expressive, analytical, humanistic, psychoeducational, cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, trauma-informed, and systems-oriented approaches. We will work with you to determine which particular combination of frameworks will best help you reach your treatment goals.

Sessions may be group-based or one-on-one, depending on individualized needs and preferences. Examples of session types include adaptive and therapeutic music lessons, therapeutic songwriting (e.g., for processing grief, working through symptoms of depression, anxiety, or PTSD/PTSS, or working towards other goals), music and expressive arts-based counseling, trauma-informed process work, addiction treatment, medical rehabilitation, personal fitness and wellness, and Neurologic Music Therapy or NMT. As a new client, your sessions will be individualized and developed to best meet your situation and preferences.

Music Therapy is the evidence-based use of music by a credentialed professional to help people feel better and work towards physical, mental, and cognitive goals.
